Freedom is 20/20 vision

Our patients discover that freedom from glasses and contact lenses enrich their lives in so many ways:

  • See clearly from the moment you wake,
  • Abandon the rigmarole of daily maintenance and your dependence on glasses and contacts,
  • See perfectly without rain, fog or sweat on your lenses,
  • Swim in the ocean and see the waves,
  • Discover the details you have been missing in the world all around you.

Freedom Eye Laser aims to relieve your daily dependence on glasses and contact lenses to enjoy the freedom of excellent, unencumbered vision.

LASIK, CUSTOMISED FOR YOU

Freedom Eye Laser offers the most advanced evolution of laser eye surgery with Contoura Vision LASIK.

This state-of-the-art technology analyses up to 22,000 elevation points to create a precise map of your cornea.  This map is employed to design a customised treatment that is uniquely yours.  It is as distinct as your fingerprint!

The topographic-guided laser reshapes the cornea to correct your prescription, whilst simultaneously smoothing the surface to resolve subtle irregularities.  Contoura Vision’s exclusive ability to perfect the corneal surface means that we have, for the very first time, a procedure that improves vision by up to two lines on a vision chart, than could ever be achieved with glasses.

Up till now, glasses and contact lenses reliably achieved the best results for correcting vision...

Contoura Vision LASIK is the first to not only outperform glasses and contact lenses - it does so by up to 2 lines on a vision chart! That's better vision, without the hassle of glasses and contact lenses!

When choosing the best option for your needs and lifestyle, there are 3 key elements to consider:

1. AM I SUITABLE FOR LASIK?

Freedom Eye Laser hold two objectives when recommending the most appropriate eye procedure for you.  We aim to achieve optimum visual clarity, and we deliver that excellent vision using the safest and most comfortable method available.

Typically age, corneal thickness and your prescription will determine if you are suitable for LASIK:

  1. If your prescription has remained unchanged for one year, around 90% of people between the ages of 18 and 45 years will be appropriate for LASIK. When you are over 45 years of age, a refractive lens exchange is more appropriate and effective.
  2. If your cornea is deemed too thin or abnormal, Advanced Surface Laser Ablation (ASLA) may be recommended.  Instead of the Femtosecond laser creating a flap, the front layer of cells of the cornea are smoothed away and the laser treatment is applied directly to the front surface of the eye. The second part of the laser procedure remains the same with the Contoura Vision excimer laser correcting your vision.  The results are just as impressive, the time to heal is longer.
  3. If you have a particularly high prescription, Dr Genge may suggest an implantable contact lens (also called a Phakic IOL or an Implantable Collamer lens – ICL).

To get an idea if you could be a good candidate for LASIK, take our suitability test.

2. TYPE OF LASER EYE SURGERY

It can be confusing to confront the variety of options currently available and to determine what is safest laser vision correction that will work best for you.  A search for laser eye surgery yields a litany of options – Blade LASIK, Femtosecond (Bladeless) LASIK, ASLA/PRK and SMILE laser to name a few… We summarised each of the options in the table above to help clarify the spectrum of available treatments and how they compare to our approach.

Freedom Eye Laser only provide the most advanced and clinically proven techniques available. Knowing we are selecting the superior methods removes uncertainty and guesswork.

3. THE SURGEON AND PRACTICE

Dr James Genge dedicates the time to understand each patient’s visual goals, thoroughly explains the process and welcomes questions.  From assessment to postoperative care and beyond, Dr Genge maintains his involvement through the entire process.

This level of Surgeon involvement and personalised care is what differentiates Freedom Eye Laser from other laser eye surgery practices. We take the time to understand your lifestyle and visual needs, with the aim of not only achieving but exceeding your expectations.

What's it like to have LASIK Eye Surgery?

Follow Max’s LASIK journey with Dr Genge.

We invite you to meet with us at Freedom Eye Laser to get started on your own journey.

What to expect

From the initial consultation through to post-operative checks, Dr James Genge will see you through the entire journey.  We invite you to experience the remarkable changes a procedure like this could make to your life.

Step 1 – Book in for an appointment with us

Contact us to discuss the best solution for you.  We will lock in an assessment time to kick-start your journey toward excellent vision and freedom from glasses and contact lenses.

Step 2 – Initial consultation

Our reception staff will greet you warmly and register your details.  We then invite you to take a seat in our relaxed and comfy lounge area.

Our Orthoptic staff will then introduce themselves and initiate the consultation process.  They will ask your medical history, determine your prescription and take precise measurements of your eyes with our state of the art diagnostic equipment.  These measurements will determine the regularity and thickness of your cornea and general health of your eye.

You will then meet with Dr Genge to discuss your lifestyle and visual goals.  The test results are explained and the best treatment approach determined. You will have plenty of time to ask questions about your sight and the suggested procedure.

You are welcome to book in at this time or take the information home to consider.

Step 3 – Preparation for surgery

Prescriptions and an information pack outlining the process for surgery is given to patients when they book.

Patients commence administering eye drops in preparation for surgery, three days before the big day.

Step 4 – Surgery day

You will meet with Dr Genge approximately 30 minutes before surgery is scheduled.  He meticulously checks your vision to optimise your results and talks you through the process so you feel calm and assured.

The procedure itself takes just fifteen minutes in total for both eyes.

Clear plastic shields are placed over the eyes for protection and remain in place until the following morning.

Step 5 – Post operative care

Patients attend the practice the following morning for their day 1 postoperative appointment.

The eye shields are removed and the new vision is tested.  This is the most exciting part of all!

Patients continue to use medicated eye drops for two weeks after surgery and a checkup is scheduled with Dr Genge at 3-months.  Eye make-up, swimming, surfing or any sport that causes perspiration should be avoided for two weeks.
