Trabeculectomy
Trabeculectomy is a surgical procedure for glaucoma that is reserved for when control with drops, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and iStent implantation has been inadequate to halt progression.
During a trabeculectomy, a slow release valve is created utilising a Mini-Express glaucoma shunt to allow a controlled release of fluid from the eye to under the outermost layer of the white of the eye, still isolated from the external environment.
Careful follow up is critical. Commonly, the pressure control is effective enough to allow the cessation of medication.
