The benefits of Extended Range of Focus (EROF) Lenses

The benefits of Extended Range of Focus (EROF) Lenses

Cataract extraction surgery is the most commonly performed procedure in the world, and that number is destined to skyrocket as Baby Boomers seek to prolong their vision. For these patients and the ones who will follow, the Extended Range of Focus (EROF) Lenses represents nothing short of a revolution. It will change cataract surgery outcomes forever and enrich millions of lives, in our practice area and around the world.

For centuries, cataract surgery patients had no choice but to wear very thick glasses or special contact lenses in order to see properly. In 1945 scientists developed the artificial Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) to replace the eye’s natural lens after it has been removed during cataract surgery.

However, more recently, IOL technology has taken a quantum leap forward – with the Extended Range of Focus (EROF) Lenses.

Freedom Eye Laser Comparison:

Extended Range of Focus (EROF) Lenses vs. Monofocal Lenses

EROF Lenses give patients the freedom to enjoy near-perfect vision in a variety of situations. Traditional IOL’s were monofocal, which means that they were good for only a single vision focus (generally, this was distance). With monofocal lenses, cataract patients have to wear corrective glasses or contacts to read, use a computer, or view things at arm’s length.

EROF Lenses allow you to have intermediate, near and far vision and allow both eyes to work together for all these distances. Monovision lenses used one eye for distance and the other for close up. Binocularity is how the brain is hard-wired to see. It allows perfect preservation of depth perception and optimal visual clarity.

EROF Lenses vs. Multifocal Lenses

Multifocal intraocular lenses provide distant, intermediate and near vision. Freedom Eye Laser utilises this technology frequently as it provides excellent reading without glasses as close as 40 cm away. They are the ideal choice for someone who demands optimal reading.

Multifocal IOL’s induce a haloing around oncoming headlights whilst driving for a period of time. This improves spontaneously as neuroadaption occurs.

If a patient is happy to read at 60 cm distance rather than 40cm, the EROF Lenses are the ideal choice as the lenses induce far less halos and have very good low light visual quality.

Dr James Genge Uses EROF Lenses’ Advanced Optics for Advanced Vision

The EROF Lenses are the only intraocular lens available that corrects for chromatic aberration. Longer wavelength red light in a traditional lens will be at a slightly different focal point to the shorter wavelength blue light. The EROF lenses will bring all the coloured wavelengths to the same focal point. This represents incredibly advanced optics in an implantable lens and is responsible for a lens that provides equal contrast sensitivity of a monofocal lens with the brilliant convenience of freedom from glasses.

Dr James Genge’s patients have achieved superior outcomes after cataract surgery at Freedom Eye Laser.

Freedom Eye Laser’s Top 4 Benefits of the EROF Lenses

We live in amazing times. For the first time in history, patients who undergo cataract surgery can achieve increased freedom from glasses for all distances, sometimes for the first time since childhood. The revolutionary EROF Lenses lenses provide:

  • Amazing multi-distance vision.
  • A complete spectrum of focus from infinity to 60 cm.
  • The least amount of haloing.
  • No significant loss of contrast sensitivity.

Most exciting of all, the EROF Lenses provide patients with a permanent improvement to their vision that will last the rest of their lives.
