Traditional IOL’s were monofocal, which means that they were good for only a single vision focus (generally, this was distance). With monofocal lenses, cataract patients have to wear corrective glasses or contacts to read, use a computer, or view things at arm’s length.
EROF Lenses allow you to have intermediate, near and far vision and allow both eyes to work together for all these distances. Monovision lenses used one eye for distance and the other for close up. Binocularity is how the brain is hard-wired to see. It allows perfect preservation of depth perception and optimal visual clarity.
